“We are dismayed to share that Kay left us unexpectedly this morning,” says part of the statement. “Kay Hagan meant everything to us, and we had the honor of sharing it with the people of North Carolina whom she took care of and for whom she fought as passionately as an elected official.
Above all, we already miss her humor and spirit as the center of our family, a role she loved more than anything. No one could light a room and make people feel welcome like Kay” they said.
Kay Hagan, a Democrat, served in the Senate from 2009 to 2015 after defeating Elizabeth Dole.
The family did not provide information on the cause of her death but said that “they are deeply grateful for the support shared with our family while Kay Hagan worked to regain her strength in recent years after her illness.”
According to the News and Record, a North Carolina newspaper reported that Hagan was in Washington in 2016 when she became ill and was admitted to a hospital with encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain.
The disease led to a month-long hospitalization and her family said later that the discomfort was caused by the Powassan virus, which is transmitted to people by ticks.Delight News
